About a month ago, I learned about a Christmas card program called "Holiday for Heroes". Organizers were seeking one million Christmas cards which will be distributed to soldiers, veterans, and service man and woman who are recovering from their wounds.

Through the Marys and Marthas, an ecumenical Christian group in our community, we spread the word, "get us some cards and we will see that they get mailed". The word went out to individuals, church groups, civic clubs, school groups. Our collection deadline was last week.

Our largest group contributor was our local elementary school. Many classes had taken on the challenge and used it as part of their learning day: we had letters from second graders written on their lined paper as they learn how to correctly write letters, there were Christmas cards made out of folded construction paper as part of their art classes, we had cards in sealed envelopes with wishes tightly wrapped inside.

All totaled from all sources we were able to mail 310 Christmas cards from the Clarion area to unknown military people and their families in one postal flat-rate box for the amazing amont of $8.90!

How do you go about getting and distributing one million Christams cards?

One card at a time!

Or in our case, a box full of 310 cards containing heartful Christmas wishes, thanking veterans and soldiers for their service to each one of us!!
