Is it little wonder that Abraham Lincoln* was one of the most well-loved presidents of our country? Some saying attributed to him:

"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

"You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

"You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

"You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

"You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

"You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative and independence.

"You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves."

Once you encourage others to become more than they are, help them to focus on what they can do for others. When people start to look outside themselves and focus on the positive difference they can make, almost everything changes for the better.

"Lord, helps us to reach out to others. Help us to know when to give another person a hand out and when to give a hand up. Help us to celebrate those who have ideas, means, and strength. Help us not to look down on those who have difficulties. And most of all, let us look to You to know when to speak up for someone or some cause and when to shut up; when to give and when to refrain from giving. Like everything in life, we are going to need Your help. In Jesus' Name. Amen."

* I didn't verify this on Snopes. If Abraham Lincoln didn't say or pen these thoughts. someone did and they make sense.
