Today is Monday, May 26th, 2014; Karen's Korner #2821

Today is Memorial Day and it's a good time to remember.

It is a U.S. federal holiday; set aside to remember the men and women who died while serving in our country's armed forces. It is a holiday celebrated every year on the last Monday of May and was formerly known as Decoration Day. It originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the countless Union and Confederate soldiers who died in that war. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in military service.

Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service.

Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.

Lord, we thank You for people willing to serve and die on our behalf to protect is from outside foes and defend our way of life, our freedoms which we have come to enjoy and take for granted. Thank You for the way that You have protected those who serve and have served; and have given us victory over those wanting to harm us. Help us to use our freedoms and our lives to worship You, to serve You, and to share Your gift of Eternal Freedom with others. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
