"Do for others what you want them to do for you."

~ Matthew 7:12 LAB

I have been planting cannas at our farm home for more than thirty years. Dig the bulbs in the fall. Plant them in the spring.

For a second spring in a row, I looked at the bulb boxes in my basement last weekend. They are no longer bulbs, but are leftover, gnarled, light-weight stems and roots. No reason to replant them they'd never grow!

What to do?

I decided to call our neighbors, the Woodleys. They tend to be gardeners; maybe they plant them and have more than they need. "No, we used to plant them, but stopped a few year ago," said Gary. "Maybe Phyllis (neighbor) has some."

I called Phyllis. Yes, she had some. Yes, she had planted all she wanted. Yes, she would give me bucket or two. Just stop by later in the afternoon.

I was overjoyed to see a couple of pails of healthy canna bulbs when I arrived at the Zweifel home on Saturday afternoon. I could take what I needed.

"Do you know where I got my cannas a number of years ago?" Phyllis asked.

I had no idea.

"You had too many that year and gave a lot of them away to other people who wanted them!"

Made me think about God's words to 'do to others what we want to be done for us'.

Who knows? We might be given back a supply of canna bulbs, we need to plant in the spring of 2015!
